FIBER CLEARINGHOUSE
The ABR Fiber Clearinghouse has been created to encourage alpaca owners to work together with other farms to create alpaca fiber products. For instance, there might be a product you’d like to make but your farm doesn’t produce enough of the right color or grade. If there were a few other farms who want to produce that product, maybe it could be done. Or, there is a product you’d like to have made but with the amount of fiber you have, the processing would cost so much you could not make a profit. If only there were enough farms to pool 25 lbs of fiber for this project, you could go together and get a better price.
The purpose of the ABR Fiber Clearinghouse is to bring together farms that want to produce certain alpaca products. This is your opportunity to work online to find others who want to produce the same products you’d like to produce but can’t on your own. ABR’s role is strictly limited to putting this interactive list on the ABR site for people to use.
Here’s how it works:
Go to the Fiber Clearinghouse List by clicking here. Read the list. Then, when you find a product you are interested in producing, type in your name and contact information. Contact the other people who want the same product. Your group will make their own arrangements. If there is a product you’d like produce but it isn’t on the list, add it at the bottom.
Make sure that all members of your group subscribe to the same quality standards for your product: that includes fiber grade, length, color. Click here for a discussion of those issues.
This link will take you to fiber processing resources that our members use: Fiber Processing Resources. If you know of other excellent fiber processing resources please send their contact information to Barb Ziek, ABR Fiber Director (bziek@aol.com). They will be added to the list.
The success of the clearinghouse will be your success. The possibilities are as unlimited as our collective imaginations.
