AOBA Rules

show abilities and Obstacle which demonstrates the alpaca's ability
and willingness to accept training and to work with its handler through
a variety of obstacles. This year we've changed the entry fee to one
fee per exhibitor and that exhibitor can enter as many as classes as
they want for that one fee.

Health
& Check-In Requirements
In an effort
to insure the health and safety of your alpacas that will be attending
the ABR Fall Festival, we have revised our requirements to meet current
needs. It is the belief of the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies and the
Show Veterinarian that a proactive approach to the health of your animals
is paramount and we encourage you to read the following requirements
carefully. Please note that these precautions can NOT guarantee a completely
disease free environment.
You must present the following documents at Vet Check ~ bring a copy that Show Management can retain for show records:
1. A
Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers) that includes the ARI number, alpaca name as on ARI certificate, microchip #, and negative BVDV results with testing method for each alpaca.
This certificate must be presented
at vet check for the alpaca to be eligible to enter the show barn. Bring
a photocopy with you that will be retained by the show management in
accordance with the new AOBA rule.
2. A
copy of the ARI Registration indicating the microchip number for
all alpacas entering the show barn. All alpacas entering the barn, both
those that will show and those that will not show, must be registered
by the Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI) and the registration certificate
must list the named alpaca's microchip number. This copy will
also be retained as part of the permanent show records.
3. We
are requiring documented evidence of a negative PCR or VI test for BVD
for all alpacas entering the show grounds due to the recent identification
of new cases of Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) in alpacas across the country.
This test will identify any Persistently Infectious (PI) alpacas and
eliminate them from participation in the show and the possibility of
them spreading BVD. A negative PCR or Virus Isolation (VI) test is good
for the life of the alpaca insuring that it is not a PI animal. The negative PCR or VI BVDV test results must be stated on the health certificate, listing the alpaca's complete
name and ARI number, will be required at vet check in order for these
alpacas to enter the show barn. A copy of the BVDV test results are no longer required. By requiring strict testing
procedures whenever a diverse group of alpacas is brought together we
move closer to eradicating BVD from the alpaca population. If you would
like further information about BVD and available testing please go to
the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies web site and refer to the articles
discussing BVD written by Dr.Callan at CSU and Dr. Kim Gardner-Graff.
Leave yourself enough time to retest if required by Show Veterinarian.
PLEASE
NOTE that requiring the negative PCR or VI BVD test for the show does NOT guarantee a BVD-free or disease-free environment at this
or any show. Alpacas testing negative are still vulnerable to future
exposure, but any potential future exposure will not result in that
animal becoming persistently infected. Researchers and Veterinarians
are advocating the prohibition of pregnant females and nursing crias
at shows for the safety of all concerned, since exposure of pregnant
females can possibly produce a PI cria the next year. Owners are also
strongly urged to observe known bio-security measures at their farms,
including isolation of all returning and incoming alpacas for 2-3 weeks
before co-mingling with the home herd.
- To further
insure the health and safety of all alpacas coming to the show, the
Vet Check procedure will take place by a member of the veterinary
staff on the transport. Alpacas will not move through a common area
for Vet Check and those animals presenting any conditions deemed by
the licensed veterinarian to put them or other alpacas at health risk
will remain on the transport and will not be allowed to move into
the barn area. Following the satisfactory examination of each alpaca
on the transport, you will be allowed to unload your animals.
