Youth Age Divisions
A. Junior Youth: 8 through 11 years
B. Intermediate Youth: 12 through 15 years
C. Senior Youth: 16 through 18 years
D. Sub-Junior Youth: Under age 8 for fun and demonstration purposes only
Exhibitor Eligibility
Open Classes: Open to all registered alpacas; all entries are to be made in the name of the registered alpaca; Exhibitors can show up to 3 alpacas.
Youth Classes: All entries must be made in the name of the Youth;
All youth ages 8 through 18 as of January 1 of the calendar year may enter youth classes;
A Youth who becomes 8 during the year is eligible to show as of their birthday.
Youth whose parents are registered with the AOBA Show Division are automatically registered as AOBA Youth.
Youth must have written permission of parent, project leader, 4-H Advisor or FFA advisor to participate;
Youth may exhibit only one entry per class.
Youth must show in appropriate age division.
Sub-juniors may not be combined with older age divisions. Sub-Juniors are demonstration only classes, and will receive participation ribbons only.
Ribbons to the top 3 finishers in each age group, plus participation ribbons.
Alpaca Eligibility
All participating alpacas must be ARI registered; Alpacas must belong to or be leased by or loaned to the youth, their family, the project group, or a 4-H/FFA Club. Rules of ownership through 4-H or FFA programs may override AOBA rules; Alpacas shown in youth classes by more than one youth may NOT be shown in Open classes.
Costume Division [Optional classes]
C-1 Age 6 to 8
C-2 Age 9-11
C-3 Age 12-15
C-4 Age 16-18
C-5 Open Division [Adult 19+]
Costume Class:
Entrants are required to participate in development of the costume (and wear) a costume for themselves and their alpaca entry. Judging will be based on originality and complexity of costume, ability of handler and alpaca to show as a team (does alpaca handle challenges of the costume such as dangling parts, legging, etc?), and general entertainment value. Each team must present a short story of 300 words or less printed on a 4” X 6” card for the announcer to read regarding the character portrayed. Ribbons to top 3 finishers in each age group, plus participation ribbons.
Fun Division: [Optional classes pending AOBA approval]
F-1 Age 6- 12 High Jump Musical Chairs. Following one practice jump, all entrants begin by circling the ring and clearing a jump of 8” in height. Any alpaca not clearing the jump exits the ring. The height is raised by 4” increments to the maximum height of 20” until only one alpaca remains as the winner clearing the highest jump. Ribbons to the top 3 finishers, plus participation ribbons.
F-2 Ages 13-adult Gambler’s Choice. Alpaca and handler enter the ring and have 90 seconds to properly execute their choice of obstacles. Winner is determined by the highest number of points achieved in 90 seconds in completing the most obstacles. Ribbons to the top 3 finishers, plus participation ribbons.
